Months after the United States invaded Iraq in 2003, I began filming the U.S. Army’s 2nd Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment (known as the Gunners) in Baghdad. The unit was housed in a bombed-out palace on the banks of the Tigris that they named Gunner Palace. Rather than just making a movie about the men, I suggested that we make a film together — an offer that the soldiers quickly embraced. They told the story of the war as only they could: They played guitar, spat out rhymes and played to the camera. But behind all their bravado and posturing, they were just kids who desperately wanted the world to understand the war through their eyes. In the last two months of 2003, the Gunners lost three men to I.E.D. attacks. They scrambled to create makeshift armor for their soft-skinned vehicles using scrap metal. When asked by a soldier about the lack of armor in 2004, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld famously said, “You go to war with the army you have, not the army you might want or wish to have at a later time.” They were the army we had. They fought an enemy they couldn’t always see in a land they didn’t understand for reasons that were never entirely clear. In the midst of the pandemic, I visited the men and spoke with them about how they make sense of their role in a war that has yet to be fully reckoned with. On August 8, nearly three years after the United States pulled out of Iraq, President Barack Obama ordered airstrikes to commence on Islamic State positions in northern Iraq, as the group’s fighters advanced towards the Kurdish capital of Erbil. For six weeks prior to the strikes the Islamic State made stunning gains within Iraq, effectively dismantling the border with Syria and defeating the Iraqi army with little in the way to stop them. In the final installment of VICE News’ unprecedented look inside the Islamic State, reporter Medyan Dairieh journeys 200 miles from the the group’s power base in the Syrian city of Raqqa to the border with Iraq. There, after defeating the Iraqi army manning the checkpoint, Islamic State fighters work further to bulldoze the border. As they clear apart a barrier that divided Iraq and Syria, Islamic State fighters declare an end of the Sykes-Picot Agreement, a nearly 100-year-old pact between France and Britain that divided up the Middle East. For now, that area between Iraq and Syria is part of a new territory: the Islamic State. The atmosphere is secular. But some areas are totally forbidden for tourists and foreigners. Because they are still looking for cutthroats hiding in the mountains. The secretary-general of South Africa’s African National Congress (ANC), Fikile Mbalula, has raised serious concerns about the double standards of western nations' policies, particularly regarding the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. His comments were made amid discussions of a possible visit by Russia's President Vladimir Putin, who is under investigation by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes. Mbalula criticised the western countries for their role in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, stating that their actions resulted in the loss of over a million lives, yet accountability has been glaringly absent. Despite the controversy surrounding Putin, Mbalula confirmed that the ANC would welcome the Russian president. One of the most infamous executions of the 21st century was when Saddam Hussein the President of Iraq went to his death on the Gallows inside a prison in Baghdad. The War in Iraq remains controversial today, as it was claimed that the Iraqi's had weapons of mass destruction and that Saddam was willing to sell them to terrorists. However after a number of raids, forces stormed a farm near to Tikrit, and Saddam was found hiding inside of a tunnel armed with a Glock pistol. He was disarmed and then was brought to trial to stand charges of execution and mass killing. Saddam Hussein was then found guilty of these charges, and was sentenced to death for his crimes. His execution was hastily arranged, and he wanted to be executed by a firing squad but he would not get this wish and was instead to be executed on the gallows. His final moments were rather angry and fractious as the members of the execution chamber who witnessed the proceedings shouted things at him. Saddam went down fighting also, as he would shout back but as soon as the trapdoor was opened he was executed.
